Southern route
Every day from 10:00 to 16:00
Our panoramic route in which we visit the southern part of the eastern coast of the island.
We depart from the port of Vrbnik in the morning and sail through the Senj channel along the coast of cliffs and rocks – a landscape shaped by the powerful blows of “storms” that cut into the sea at a sharp angle, a place where griffon vultures build their nests, and are also home to other species birds such as the kite eagle, peregrine falcon, kestrel, cormorant and others. Ornithological reserve Kuntrep as such is the oldest ornithological reserve in the world.
After an hour and a half of sailing and enjoying nature, we arrive at Mala Luka, one of the more famous bays on the island of Krk. The beach in the bay is surrounded by lawns and sheep and has a special shepherd’s – mountain charm. Nearby is the Corinthia fort, from where there is a wonderful view of both bays. Transportation by dinghy to the beach is possible, so you can swim on the beach, take a walk in nature, etc.
At noon, we continue our route towards the islet of Zečevo.
Zečje Island is located in the Velebit Channel, it is uninhabited, and there are more than enough other inhabitants. Its highest peak protrudes 12 m above the sea.
The depth of the sea in the Velebit channel is about 60 meters, and around the islet about 40 meters. It is exposed to a strong storm that reaches its highest speeds right in the Velebit channel. The story of the locals says that the islet got its name from the rabbits that someone settled on it a long time ago, but they did not manage to survive on this harsh landscape. They also say that people used to go to Zečje to collect seagulls’ eggs for Easter, and along with the eggs, wild onions, wild swiss chard and a type of sikavica were allegedly planted there by the shepherds of Bašća.
In addition to sightseeing, we feed seagulls here; we give them a small blue fish that they catch directly from our hands. An experience not to be missed!
After that, the return to Vrbnik starts along the steep landscape. This time we sail more slowly observing and looking for griffon vultures and their young.
The next destination is pure enjoyment again. We arrive at Draga Bašćanska beach, disembark and spend time as we wish. Swimming on the beach and resting or a pleasant walk to the remains of the church of St. Nicholas and sightseeing.
After enjoying ourselves and learning various interesting things, it is time to return.
For the rest of the day, we recommend staying in Vrbnik and enjoying its narrow streets of the old town, sunbathing on the beaches or hiding from the sun in one of the local bars.
